The Haleakala Crater.....Monday 19th February....

Todays tour is to the Haleakala Crater or "The Sleeping Volcano"...
This is a view as we start to climb the 9,500ft to the top visitors centre of the National Park. At this time we are not sure we will be able to go all the way to the top as the heavy rain yesterday fell as snow on the mountains...but our driver guide is in contact with his control centre and getting updates from the rangers who are clearing the road and parking lots...
The first stop on our climb is at the Park entrance and lower visitor centre and good news we can continue to the crater...
When we exit the park later this morning the queue to get in was at least 5 miles long....it's Presidents Day and therefore a bank holiday, also news of snow at the top has drawn visitors here...
Looking down on the fluffy clouds from the lower visitor centre...it was very cool here but nothing like we will experience at the top !!!
The very pretty native "ahinahina" plant.....
Some of the many observation posts at the summit of Haleakala and the SNOW !!
Are we really in Hawaii !!!!
It wasn't until I just added this photo that I noticed the sign !!!!!!
Fascinating colours of the Crater......
Beautiful....
Photos all taken very quickly before heading into the visit centre and views from there, it was freezing, the take your breath away type of cold....there was a really strong icy wind....but so worth the visit....
Heading back down to the ship....very scenic...
Our driver guide today was excellent, we again learnt a lot of history of the island and his driving was so smooth...
Back on the ship in time for late lunch and a free afternoon before the 6 of us met in the Goldrush Bar for what was to become an "it's a 5 o'clock somewhere" ritual...
Cheers to that !!
Todays creation....
A very good day today, history, sights and company....

Receiving loud and clear. Well you had an eventful first tour.
Love the endangered species photo. Looks like the snow behind us now , and temperature rising , it was quite a problem last weekend. Hope that you are enjoying the warmer weather as per Michaels e mail.
    Take care.
